April Hitzelberger is a partner at Waranch & Brown. Her practice focuses on the defense of health care providers in medical malpractice, research study and professional licensure matters. She has successfully litigated and tried cases in the District and Circuit Courts of Maryland and represented health care providers in licensing and credentialing matters. She also maintains a special interest in appellate advocacy and has argued before the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.
Ms. Hitzelberger has been invited to present to ophthalmologists, other physicians and nurses on the effective use of electronic medical records, patient communication, risk management and other medical-legal issues. Additionally, she was selected as a “Rising Star” by Maryland Super Lawyers and recognized as one of the top up-and-coming attorneys in the state from 2013-2019.
Ms. Hitzelberger is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States as well as all Maryland state and federal Courts. Currently, she is a member of the MD-DC Society for Healthcare Risk Management, the Maryland State Bar Association and the Baltimore County Bar Association. Additionally, Ms. Hitzelberger is a member of the Maryland Defense Counsel, for which she serves on the Appellate Committee and she co-authored a publication in the Winter 2009 edition of The Defense Line entitled, “Challenging Plaintiff’s Causation Expert.”
Prior to joining the Firm, Ms. Hitzelberger clerked for the Honorable Vicki Ballou-Watts of the Circuit Court for Baltimore County.
Ms. Hitzelberger graduated summa cum laude from Towson University with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a minor in music performance. She earned her law degree, with honors, from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2005. During law school, she was a member of the National Moot Court Team and served as an Articles Editor for the Journal of Health Care Law and Policy. Ms. Hitzelberger was elected to the Order of the Barristers for her work in advocacy.
