April J. Hitzelberger is a Partner at Waranch & Brown, where her practice is dedicated to appellate advocacy. In her role as Chair of Waranch & Brown’s Appellate Division, Ms. Hitzelberger counsels clients on a wide range of appellate issues, beginning with a proper strategy for preserving the trial record for appeal. She honed her written advocacy skills in drafting appellate briefs for all levels of Maryland’s appellate courts, as well as for the 4th Circuit. Ms. Hitzelberger has argued before the Appellate Court of Maryland (formerly Maryland Court of Special Appeals) and previously served on the Appellate Committee for the Maryland Defense Counsel.

Ms. Hitzelberger also maintains an active trial practice which focuses on the defense of health care providers in medical malpractice, research study and professional licensure matters. She has successfully litigated and tried cases in the District and Circuit Courts of Maryland and represented health care providers in licensing and credentialing matters. Additionally, she was selected as a Maryland “Super Lawyer” in 2022 and 2023 and a “Rising Star” from 2013 – 2020 in the area of medical malpractice.

Ms. Hitzelberger is an active presenter and has been invited to present to ophthalmologists, other physicians and nurses on cyber security, telehealth, the impact of COVID-19 on patient care and office practices, ADA compliance, patient communication, risk management and other medical-legal issues.

Ms. Hitzelberger is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States, as well as all Maryland state and federal courts. Currently, she is a member of the MD-DC Society for Healthcare Risk Management, the Maryland State Bar Association, the Baltimore County Bar Association and the Maryland Defense Counsel.

Prior to joining the Firm, Ms. Hitzelberger clerked for the Honorable Vicki Ballou-Watts of the Circuit Court for Baltimore County. She graduated summa cum laude from Towson University with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a minor in music performance. She earned her law degree, with honors, from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2005. During law school, she was a member of the National Moot Court Team and served as an Articles Editor for the Journal of Health Care Law and Policy. Ms. Hitzelberger was elected to the Order of the Barristers for her work in advocacy.
